Dispersion is to form a resin or polymer coating on the surface of the pigment carbon black, so that the original pigment agglomerate can form a more stable small    agglomerate, that is to say, the carbon black dispersant must have enough affinity or force with the pigment surface to play its role, so that it can form a stronger and more stable adsorption layer on the pigment surface, that is, the coating layer; At the same time, the solvent and resin in the carbon black dispersion system will also have competitive adsorption on the pigment, and the dispersant must form stronger adsorption with the pigment than the resin and solvent to play the dispersion role.

The pigment carbon black in the carbon black series is a better pigment in black coating and paint. However, sometimes for many reasons, flocculation will occur after a long time. To solve this problem, the flocculation mechanism of carbon black must be clarified first. The dispersion of carbon black is the most difficult among all kinds of pigments, due to the strong aggregation between carbon black particles and high oil absorption. In addition, the surface area of carbon black, especially the post-oxidized pigment carbon black, is generally large, and it is easy to absorb water in the surrounding environment.

In addition, in order to form a stable dispersion system, there must be a long enough solvation chain segment, that is, the dispersant must have a proper molecular weight, so that during the coating storage process, carbon black particles will not re-flocculate into large particles due to the collision caused by Brownian motion or extend the time of flocculation and coarsening. Under the same formula conditions, the amount of pigment carbon black added is large. If the amount of carbon black dispersant is insufficient, it cannot reach the best dispersion state. Only when the amount of carbon black used and the amount of dispersant are adjusted properly, can it be dispersed well and shiny.

We believe that to compare the blackness and color of different carbon black, it is necessary to completely disperse the carbon black. If the resin with poor wettability is used and the inappropriate carbon black dispersant is used, the performance of carbon black cannot be truly displayed. Especially for high pigment carbon black, if no suitable dispersant is used, or if a good dispersant is used but the dosage is insufficient, or the dispersant is somewhat incompatible with the resin system, the dispersed pigment particles are easy to flocculate, thus affecting the evaluation of its blackness.
